About Craig Glassonbury Marine in his Craig’s own words

“I have been around boats most of my life, my parents had a boat and I sailed with them in the Bristol Channel from a very young age.

When school organised work experience, I went to the local boatyard (R W Davis & son Ltd) and had a week which went well.

When school offered a second week of work experience later that year it had to be in a different workplace. I wanted to go back to the boatyard so I dug my heels in and managed to get a second week there.

When I finished school I started working at R W Davis & son Ltd as well as attending college. I achieved a City and Guilds in Furniture Making and spent the first 5 years mainly in the woodwork shop.

After that I moved into the fabrication shop, building steel boats. I became more experienced with boatbuilding and repair work and by 1999 I was in a management role.

This evolved gradually over the years until I became responsible for all the work carried out by the 10 staff.

This included steel boat building, repairing of steel, timber, aluminium and GRP vessels, fitting out work, drydocking of around 100 boats per year, craning and chocking up boats, engineering work and paintwork.

During my career at R W Davis & son Ltd, I have been involved in the building of around 80 vessels, from high quality narrowboats to large class V passenger vessels and seagoing boats.. I now continue to work with them in a consultancy basis, whilst I continue to develop Craig Glassonbury Marine, Surveys and Consultancy business.

I’ve been involved in every aspect of this from laying the keel to taking vessels out for acceptance trials.

I’ve also carried out many large scale towing and salvage operations as skipper and team leader. I have produced the risk assessments, method statements and towing plans for these operations to a standard that satisfies the Environment Agency, Canal and River Trust and Gloucester Harbour Trustees.”
